Establishing a new healthy habit is simple, but not easy. Decide on a goal, choose an action that helps get you closer to that goal, then plan when and how you’ll complete that action. Make sure you’re reinforcing the trigger-habit-reward loop and keep consistent. Be patient and committed for the sixty to ninety days it takes for the habit to stick. Simple.

There is a more fundamental skill being mastered in the background, however, as you engage in this process. By cultivating patience and discipline, by consciously setting goals that align with your values, and by deliberately working with your own unconscious mind, you are developing the skill of all skills: the ability to learn, and change, and evolve. This is a skill that will never lose value, and will enrich your life no matter how you choose to use it.
